“I Hate Taxes and Accounting” Course for Real Estate Agents

SDA-GROUP-CLASSThere is a typical timeline that most agents follow with respect to taxes and accounting for their real estate business. Most agents start out with a personal credit card they designate for “business expenses”. At some point, they get hit with a large tax bill because their income grew dramatically. So, they create either an S-Corp or an LLC. Tracking expenses, managing receipts and reconciling accounts is usually something that gets done at the end of the year when it’s tax time (because they are busy selling houses). At some point, they may decide pay themself Payroll to effectively manage business taxes – that brings on the additional responsibility of paying payroll taxes. And, what about estimated taxes?

If your eyes are glazing over, you’re in good company. Most agents would rather be selling houses than  tracking expenses, worrying about payroll and tax planning. But, it is so important to effective business  management and can cost an agent a bundle if it is put on the back burner. According to Red Robin Group Broker, Melissa Wakamo, “Finding a good CPA and bookkeeper is one of the very best leverage things I have done for myself. The accounting and tax planning system doesn’t have to be complicated. Many agents can effectively do all of their bookkeeping themselves with the right system and training. But, as your business grows, many agents may prefer to outsource this function and focus on selling houses.”

At Red Robin Group, we feel that providing agents with resources to get their financial house in order is crucial to their success. While it isn’t the sexiest topic for training and we recognize that agents may rather make 1,000 cold calls then come to a training class about taxes, we have tried to make it as pleasant as possible. And, we think we’ve done a pretty good job with our training course entitled “I Hate Taxes and Accounting” Course for Real Estate Agents.

We’ve partnered with SDA CPA Group to provide training for our agents. Headed by CPA Stanley Dean, SDA is a company that specializes in working with small businesses to provide a full range of services. From basic bookkeeping and tax planning, to full scale accounting and payroll services, SDA is a great resource for agents at all experience levels. The “I Hate Taxes and Accounting” Course for Real Estate Agents training, provided by CPA Stanley Dean, is offered 4 times each year because we think it’s that important.

The course covers the following topics:

 • When should I incorporate?
 • LLC vs. S-Corp. for Real Estate Agents
 • Quickbooks basics for Real Estate Agents
 • The Top 5 Business Expenses Agents May Miss
At Red Robin Group, our agents also have the advantage of a complimentary consultation with SDA
upon joining our brokerage. Why? Because we think it’s important to our agents’ success to have a
 handle on their business finances.

When Melissa Wakamo began her real estate career in 2004, her goal was to focus on her immediate area and get to know her neighbors. "I've had a lot of fun over the years helping my neighbors sell their homes and helping newcomers become a part of our community."

Melissa quickly became one of metro Atlanta's top producing agents and consistently performed in the top 1% of all Atlanta agents. By 2009, Melissa's real estate team had grown to include several agents and support staff, dedicated to providing exceptional service to buyers and sellers in Atlanta's intown neighborhoods.

In 2010, Melissa transitioned Red Robin REALTORS® into an independently owned boutique brokerage. Even in the tough real estate market during that time, Red Robin REALTORS® continued to outperform other small brokerages and was able to help buyers and sellers adapt to the rapid changes in the market.

In 2017, Melissa had the opportunity to merge the Red Robin REALTORS team with another like-minded boutique brokerage, Keller Knapp Realty. The two community-focused organizations bring together more than 100 agents, including 3 of the top 10 agents in metro Atlanta. With offices in Oakhurst, Ormewood Park and Midtown, Keller Knapp Realty and Red Robin REALTORS team are the top boutique real estate firm in Atlanta.

In her role as Managing Broker, Melissa provides agent training, marketing and strategic oversight for the Brokerage, ensuring that the brokerage maintains its focus and commitment to the intown market.

Melissa's active participation in various neighborhood organizations and charitable efforts, as well as her passion for antiques, cooking, and gardening, keep her busy and in touch with the community.
