Zombies Are Coming to Grant Park!

grant parkZombies, you say? Why, yes!  Atlanta Zombie Apocalypse 5K is coming soon!

Zombies are coming to historic Grant Park and Ormewood Park in October for an inventive, scary and family-friendly fundraiser! On October 29, 2016, the Atlanta Zombie Apocalypse 5K will take place as a benefit for Maynard Jackson High School PTSA. What’s a Zombie 5K? Race participants begin the 5K with flags around their waist and, along the course, zombies will be hiding and will jump out to try to grab the flags of runners and walkers. Finishers in all age groups must cross the finish line with at least one flag remaining!

The zombie 5K isn’t a new idea, but the concept to make it a fundraiser to engage students at Maynard Jackson High School in Grant Park is unique. “We have a great opportunity to bring together the running community and students at the high school to pull off an event to raise funds for the PTSA”, says Melissa Wakamo, Principal Broker at Red Robin REALTORS®.  The boutique real estate firm is the Presenting Sponsor of the event.  “As a business owner and resident of the community, I wanted to create something fun and unique — something that would engage the students, bring out our families to participate and have a broad appeal beyond just our local community.  A zombie 5K seemed to fit the bill nicely!”

The drama students will be zombie actors and will also be helping with make-up, costumes and props for the scary scenes. Art students were asked to submit original designs for the race t-shirts and the winning submission will be featured. The track and other athletic teams will run as groups to show their team spirit! According to Principal Stephanie Johnson, “Being able to pull the students into this event and engage them with the community gives them an opportunity most of these teens haven’t experienced before.  They are excited that they can participate in ways that will make it a great event and they can see the product of their hard work.”

All proceeds from the race will benefit the Maynard Jackson High School PTSA, to provide funding for new school programs. “Our school has come a long way in the past 3 years, but there are still many things these kids need and want to make their high school experience all it should be. Principal Johnson is committed to giving our students the resources they need — it’s our job to help raise the funds needed,” says PTSA President, Kim Durham-Wright.

Many area businesses have joined Red Robin REALTORS® to support this event.  Sponsors include Bennett’s Deli, Rex Burruss Design, Intown Healthy Hound, Intown Atlanta Psychiatry, CrossFit, Green Stone Design, The Joint, Morningside Pediatric Dentistry, WineSmith Company, Balanced Fit Life, Chick-Fil-A, Trader Joe’s and Kroger.  “We saw this sponsorship opportunity as a great way to support the kids in our community, and gain exposure for our business.  We’re pleased to be part of this very special 5K”, noted Bridget Galloway, owner of Intown Healthy Hound.
